Triathlon raises £600 for school kit

From the Falmouth Packet, first published Tuesday 10th Oct 2006.

OVER 50 competitors took part in the first ever "Mytri" on Sunday, raising over £600 to buy new play equipment for Mylor Bridge primary school and pre-school.

The triathlon attracted 51 entrants, aged from 16 to 56, and started at Restronguet Sailing Club with an 800m swim to Mylor Harbour. The competitors then got on their bikes to start a 12 mile cycle ride through Mylor village, Treluswell, Penryn and returning back to the harbour for the final stage of the competition.

The four mile run took competitors cross country around Trefusis Head, Flushing returning through the country roads to the yacht harbour.

Roger Graffy, owner of Mylor Harbour, said "The course was challenging with steep hills which were wet after the torrential rain from the previous night. However, the triathletes relished the opportunity to take on the elements and the day ran smoothly."

After the swim Stephen Ferguson was leading the event closely followed by Natasha Diment and Nathan Jolly. However, Nathan's strength and competitive edge took him into first position for the cycle and he continued to lead, winning the event in 1 hour 18 minutes. Carl Harwood was second with a time of 1 hr and 21 minutes and Steve Kelly was in hot pursuit taking third position in 1 hr and 22 minutes.

Bernie Bush was the first woman to complete the course in 1 hr and 41 minutes. Natasha Diment made an outstanding debut, taking second place at 1 hr and 43 minutes and Susie Harwood took third position at 1 hr and 44 minutes.

The day ended with prize giving at the harbour hosted by Roger Graffy who presented the Mylor Triathlon Trophy.

Martyn Addinall, event co-ordinator, said: "Today has been a great day for triathletes and supporters and I am keen for this event to continue. We've already received excellent feedback from the competitors who would like this to appear at the end of the triathlon calendar for years to come. We owe the success of the day to the fantastic surroundings and great hospitality from the people in and around Mylor and look forward to next year."

Over £600 was raised towards outdoor play and sports equipment for Mylor pre- and primary schools.

"The support from parents and friends who volunteered during the day was superb, and of course, the day would not have happened without the support of local sponsors, especially Pure Blue Water who cannot be thanked enough," said Mr Addinall.
