The 25,000 ton Bahamas registered liner Maxsim Gorkiy arrives next Thursday morning for a cruise visit. She will anchor in the Cross Channel anchorage allowing passengers to come ashore to the docks in tenders. Built in 1974 as the Hamburg for Deutsche Atlantik Linie, the ship had an uneventful start to her career and in 1974 she was renamed Hanseatic. Later that year with the German company in financial difficulty she was sold to the Black Sea Shipping Company who named her Maksim Gorkiy the name she held until 1991 when she became Maxim Gorkiy. In 1989 when on a voyage from Iceland to the Gulf of Magdalene, Spitzbergen, she began to sink after becoming trapped in the ice which crushed her hull causing a leak. Scientists and Triton await perfect weather

Equipment is being mobilised and loaded onto the trimaran vessel Triton at the docks as scientists await a perfect weather window to send a manned balloon to the edge of space to beat the existing world record altitude. The attempt to launch the largest manned balloon in history will be made off St Ives QinetiQ, Europe's leading science and technology research company, is sponsoring the two British pilots Andy Elson and Colin Prescot in their bid to break the world altitude record for a manned balloon which stands at 114,000 feet. The Met Office is sending a continuos supply of weather data to the team to identify the time when conditions are right to launch the balloon QinetiQ 1 from Triton's deck. In particular, the high winds of the jetstream need to be benign for a successful mission. Triton's master Captain Mike Rose said: "We have been ready for a month just waiting for the word to load up all the equipment." The balloon envelope is made of polythene and is similar in thickness to a household freezer bag, but has been manufactured with special additives to enhance its performance in a hostile environment. The balloon is taller than the Empire State building with a volume of 1.2 million cubic metres. According to the flight schedule QinetiQ 1 will reach 80,000 feet two hours after lifting off from Triton's deck. An hour later the balloon reaches 114,000 feet and breaks the existing world record. The pilots will then take the balloon to 132,000 feet to establish a new world record during which time they will conduct a series of experiments. Splashdown for the pilots will come 12 hours after lift off when the balloon will come down in the sea off west Cornwall. People within a 600-mile diameter footprint beneath the flight, should get a glimpse of the enormous balloon rising up into the sky.   more...

Giant vessel moves to make room for Argus

The giant Italian roll on roll off vessel Grande Africa has moved to the Cross Roads mooring buoy to make way for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel Argus which arrived yesterday for the start of her multi-million pound refit that will last for 110 days. Grande Mediterraneo, a third vessel from the fleet of car carriers operated by Grimaldi Group Naples dry docked in perfect weather conditions on Sunday afternoon. Work on the Grimaldi vessels has involved extensive refitting and because of the sheer size of the vessels - an enormous paint job for the yard. The refits have an average of about 160 people a day, from all trades, working on them - including around 40 painters. With the Grande Africa, a team from A&P sailed from Lagos to start preparatory work ensuring the refit period was kept to a minimum. The refits for each of the vessels involved overhauls to the bow and stern thrusters as the ships are highly manoeuvrable. Other work will also included new steelwork, new seals for the propeller blades, overhaul of sea valves, various new pipework, and main engine work. The vessels operated by Grimaldi sail regularly between Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and West Africa, carrying up to 4000 cars, as well as containers and general cargo. The company's fleet also trades across the North Atlantic and to South America. A&P Falmouth's managing director Peter Child said: "The size of these vessels has been a talking point in the town - they tower above the yard and they are probably the highest ships we've ever had in Falmouth. "However, the sheer size of these vessels has also meant we've been keeping the yard's workforce very busy and we're delighted our competitive prices and high quality of work has resulted in Grimaldi committing a third vessel for refit."   more...

Poultry report is positive

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee report is right to point out that competition or the UK poultry sector needs to be fair if the industry is to survive. The House of Commons committee report concludes that high UK animal welfare standards result in extra costs to producers that foreign competitors do not have to bear. Coupled with increasing trade liberalisation that encourages cheaper imports, this cost burden is putting the domestic industry under financial pressure. NFU poultry Chairman Charles Bourns said the NFU fully agreed with the main thrust of the report that all products offered for sale on the European market must be produced to equivalent standards. He said: "The NFU has been making this very point for some time. British farmers are incredulous when their efforts to produce to high welfare standards are undermined by imported poultry and eggs produced to lower standards. It is patently unfair to offer shoppers chicken and eggs produced to standards lower than that of our own country while increasing the regulatory burden on domestic producers."  more...
